Hanford is a day and boarding preparatory school for girls aged 7 - 13, set in 45 acres of rolling Dorset countryside. Founded by the Reverend and Mrs Clifford Canning in 1947, the school was taken over by their daughter Sarah in 1959. In 2004, Sarah Canning passed it over to the charitable trust which now runs it. This rare sense of family and continuity has shaped Hanford and made it the special place it is today.
Hanford stands out against the rising tide of educational uniformity. Our teaching is traditional, but we love free spirits and adventure. Our children have the chance to be children and enjoy life to the full. We believe that the children who come to Hanford should always be allowed to be children and to enjoy the natural life and play of a child. They should be allowed to mature in their own time and as individuals in their own right. They should learn to live with other children. There is, therefore, always time for play and for free imagination, which enables them to make friends and to keep them.
We don't have a mould because we know that girls come in all shapes and sizes. But we aim to give them all a chance to do well, whether academically, musically, in the art room, on stage or on horse-back. By the time they leave Hanford they will have learned to work for themselves without continual pressure or supervision, and to know that they have within them the seeds of achievement in whatever sphere it may be.
