School Profile

Our service comprises of a school and children's home which follows an autism-specific, holistic approach where young people are given opportunities to maximise their potential, enabling them to develop skills to live as independently as possible. New Options at Barton is a newly built, purpose designed facility incorporating a range of innovative concepts and approaches that enable young people with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) to make sense of the world around them. This is facilitated through access to a child centred, creative and flexible curriculum and an individual approach to care. The use of visual strategies to support communication is strongly emphasised. The service offers an integrated approach that meet the individual needs of the children. The service is a 52 week residential provision for 26 children/young people. Education is provided during term time for all residential children with the potential for an additional 8 day places. The Barton School offers National Curriculum subjects for children in key stages 2, 3 and 4 and a vocational based curriculum for Post 16 students. However, we believe a curriculum for children and young people with ASD must take into account their particular strengths and difficulties in learning to learn.

The aim of the children's home is to provide an innovative positive caring environment that promotes the development of the whole child. Other facilities offered by the school are vocational education areas, bistro and cinema. The school also offers a short breaks service.

The short breaks service does not include education, but support will be provided to: continue attendance at the child's normal school or college (within reasonable traveling distance); support them to complete homework or assignments; continue with any other daytime activities, wherever feasible. Each young person will have an individual programme for their stay that fits in with their usual care and support plan. Programmes of short break support can be planned up to a year ahead.
