Saint Felix School

School Profile

Saint Felix School comprises the Senior school (Years 7-13), the Preparatory school (Years 3-6) and Pre-Prep department, with pupils able to start at a very young age in the Dragons' Nursery, continuing into Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. Pupils move right through to the Sixth form: almost all proceed to higher education.

Considerable change has taken place within the school in recent years. The school now occupies one site and all departments are fully co-educational. While overall the school now has more day pupils than boarders, it still retains a boarding ethos and operates an extended day. There are separate girls' and boys' boarding houses plus a Sixth Form boarding house.

Saint Felix School was founded in 1897 by Margaret Isabella Gardiner. The school is situated in 70 acres of attractive grounds close to Southwold. The site is impressive, with long views over farmland, heath and marshes towards the sea. The town of Southwold, with its much photographed beach huts, famous lighthouse and attractive shops, is within walking distance. Ipswich, Norwich and Cambridge are all easily accessible, while Lowestoft, Beccles and Halesworth are all within a short drive. There are many opportunities for both adults and children to enjoy the surrounding countryside. Sailing, golf, bird-watching, walking and country pursuits are all readily available and good concerts and theatres are within easy reach. The school has excellent sporting facilities which all staff may use.

The main school buildings were built at the turn of the 20th century and, in recent years, new buildings have been added to keep the school in the forefront of educational progress. Saint Felix has excellent facilities that are hard to match elsewhere in East Anglia. These include a modern dining room, three refurbished boarding houses, a music school, well equipped science laboratories, library, a purpose built block for design technology and 3D art, a drama studio, an indoor swimming pool and extensive playing fields. A sports hall and equestrian course have been added in recent years. There are ample classrooms, an assembly hall and a Chapel - the school is non-denominational. The new Silcox Theatre opened at the end of the Summer Term 2008.

The school has a strong academic reputation and offers a varied and broad curriculum. The Advanced Level results in Summer 2008 were most pleasing, with 52% of all entries gaining A grades. These excellent academic achievements are paralleled by a fine record in all other aspects of school life: art, music, drama and sport, especially swimming. Extra-curricular activities are given considerable emphasis. The Prep school runs its own excellent activity scheme, the Saint George's Award. The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, the A.C.F and the Young Enterprise Scheme are popular options for older students.
